Sitka Trail Works is leading a free guided hike on the Gavin Hill/Harbor Mountain Trail. Meet Saturday, July 22nd at 9:00am by the Sitka High School (SHS) Auditorium entrance to Cross Trail.  The hike is difficult and approximately 6 miles.  We will hike all the way up the Gavan side to the rock bench at the top, down past the small shelter, around to Harbor Mt. parking area.  We’ll have a pickup truck staged at the end to provide a ride back to the SHS rear parking lot for those that need transportation.

The trail is a strenuous 6 miles, and depending on the speed of hikers 3-5 hours long.   Expect extensive stairs, roots, rocks, and log or rock steps which can be very slippery when wet. Gavan Hill Trail rises steeply to 2400 feet in 1.6 miles to an alpine ridge. The trail gains another 600′ in 1.5 miles to the Harbor Mt shelter cabin.  From the shelter the trail goes up and down 2.4 miles to the Harbor Mountain trailhead. Wonderful vistas of Sitka Sound, Mt. Edgecumbe, and numerous mountains and islands can be seen from the trail.  Participants should bring their own water, food and appropriate clothing for the weather.
