FAQS

How easy is it to win prizes?

If you walk or bike on a day that Lincoln Street is closed, you automatically qualify for a free gift card. Or if you’re new to active commuting, you just have to walk or bike to work once and you get a free gift card to a coffee shop!

Who is sponsoring this new program?

The City and Borough of Sitka, Sitka Trial Works, SEARHC and the Sitka Cycling Club are the main partners.  Visit Sitka, the Sitka Chamber of Commerce, and the Sitka Conservation Society are providing promotional support.

What is the purpose of Walk, Bike, Win?

To make our busy summer season smoother for everyone by reducing traffic congestion while supporting the health of local residents who can walk, bike, and win by being active commuters.

What is an active commuter?

Active travel modes include walking or cycling as an alternative to motorized transport for the purpose of making everyday journeys.  The walk bike win program is designed for active commuters who are traveling to downtown Sitka, on foot or on bike, for basic transportation.  Examples included going to work downtown, shopping, going out to eat, attending an event.  Active commuters simultaneously meet needs for transportation, physical activity and fun all in one.

What counts as downtown?

Anything in this blue zone counts as downtown:

How can I get points that can add up to prizes?

Arriving at a destination in the downtown “blue zone” and then recording it on the Walk Bike Win Smart Sheet which is found at https://sitkatrailworks.org

What is the point system?

  • +1 point for any human powered commute downtown.
  • +1 point for a daytime trip between 7am – 6pm.
  • +1 point on a day that Lincoln Street is closed.
  • 1 extra bonus point for new commuters (people that have done 12 or less human powered commutes downtown in the last year)

So, if I’m a new person and I walk or bike downtown on a day when Lincoln street is closed, I can get 4 points with that one active commute?

Yes!

What counts as a new commuter?

Local people that have done 12 or less human powered/active commutes to a downtown destination in the past year.   Usually, it’s Sitkan’s who use their person vehicle and are new to walking or bike for transportation.

What if I already live downtown?

You can participate like everyone else because what counts is that you arrive downtown

Do I have to log in an enter my arrivals on every individual trip?

You can do it after every trip, or you can save them up and enter your individual trips at the same time.  For example, once a week you could go the walk bike win smartsheet page and enter your individual trips one after another.

Any tips on how to remember and track my active commutes to everyday destinations downtown?

Keep a paper copy that you fill out as you go.  It’s best to keep it in a visible spot like on your refrigerator or near your computer.  Click here to download your paper copy, which also lists the days when Lincoln Street is closed to vehicles.
